Discipline-based Education Research

In Discipline-based Education Research (DbER), scientists investigate learning and teaching within a discipline using multiple methods deeply grounded in that field's practices, knowledge, and values. Specific areas of study include STEM reasoning and learning (see Schunn) and developing instructional theories to promote learning and transfer in mathematics and science (see Nokes-Malach), see also Whose Ability and Growth Matter? Gender, Mindset and Performance in Physics (see Schunn); AP Course Credit and Undergraduate Student Success in Gateway Science Courses (Schunn); and Mind the Gap: How a Large-Scale Course Re-Design in Economics Reduced Performance Gaps (see Schunn).
