New $164K Spencer Foundation Award Builds Research Community in Quantum Information Science Education

October 8, 2026

Raquel Coelho (Principal Investigator), LRDC research scientist and assistant professor at the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Computing and Information (SCI), has been awarded a $164,000 grant from the Spencer Foundation. Titled "Building Community and Identifying High-Yield Research at the Intersection of Quantum Information Science Education and Learning Sciences,” the 18-month project spans August 1, 2026, to January 31, 2028. The project brings together researchers in quantum information science (QIS) education and the learning sciences to build a shared research community and identify the most promising directions for future study, laying groundwork for how learners come to understand an emerging and increasingly important field.

The Spencer Foundation was founded in 1962 to investigate ways education might be improved. The Large Grants on Education Program supports rigorous, intellectually ambiguous and technically sound research that explores the most pressing questions and compelling opportunities in education.
